Subtitle Workshop: Unlocking the Potential of Audiovisual Translation in English for Specific Purposes

The increasing importance of globalization and communication has led to a growing demand for effective language training, particularly in specific contexts such as business and military. As a result, researchers have been exploring the benefits of audiovisual translation (AVT) in language teaching, with a focus on its potential to enhance learners' comprehension skills and improve their ability to communicate effectively in real-life situations.

Previous studies by Talaván (2006), Ávila-Cabrera (2021), and Fuentes-Luque and Campbell (2020) have confirmed the importance of AVT in language teaching, highlighting its benefits for both general and specific purposes. However, despite these advances, there is still a lack of research on the potential applications of AVT in teaching languages for specific purposes (LFE).

This article aims to contribute to this line of investigation by exploring the potential of subtitle translation, a key modality of audiovisual translation, in developing oral comprehension skills and as an element in designing didactic units for English for Specific Purposes (ESP). By examining the benefits of subtitle translation and its potential applications in LFE, this study hopes to provide insights into how educators can harness the power of AVT to enhance language learning outcomes.

The article will begin by outlining the theoretical framework underpinning the use of subtitle translation in language teaching, followed by an analysis of the existing research on AVT and LFE. The study will then present a case study examining the effectiveness of subtitle translation in enhancing oral comprehension skills among ESP learners. Finally, the article will conclude with implications for language educators and recommendations for future research.

Overall, this study aims to shed light on the potential of subtitle translation as a valuable tool for developing oral comprehension skills and improving language learning outcomes in LFE contexts. By exploring the benefits and applications of AVT in LFE, this article hopes to contribute to the ongoing conversation about effective language teaching strategies and support the development of more innovative and engaging language curricula.
